Willow Harvesting Due to Commence at Ushaw Estate

As part of the ongoing land management of the Ushaw Estate, the harvesting of our willow crop is set to begin shortly. This agricultural process takes place every three years and is carried out by industry leaders Holmen Iggesund.

This year’s (and previous years) harvest was delayed due to exceptionally wet soil conditions, however, following an extended spell of dry weather the contractors are now able to begin operations this spring. Harvesting when soil conditions are too wet leads to damage to the soil structure, hence the reason for waiting until it is dry enough.

Before work begins, Holmen Iggesund will carry out a wildlife survey to ensure that no habitats are at risk of disturbance. Both Ushaw and Holmen Iggesund take their environmental responsibilities seriously and operate in full compliance with all legal obligations regarding wildlife protection and countryside conservation.

Holmen Iggesund staff are also trained to identify nesting birds and other wildlife during the harvesting process. Should any species be discovered, work will be immediately paused and appropriate steps taken to ensure their safety.

Once harvested, the willow is transported to Holmen Iggesund’s Workington Mill in Whitehaven, where it is processed into biomass fuel used in the production of sustainable paper packaging. The mill is ranked among the world’s top 1% for sustainability, further highlighting the environmental benefits of this partnership.

Willow is a fast-growing crop ideal for biomass. Regular harvesting encourages regeneration and supports long-term ecological balance. This year’s harvest reflects Ushaw Estate’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, responsible land stewardship, and support for renewable energy.
