Dogs at Ushaw

Ushaw allows well-behaved dogs inside the Main House.

Accessibility

It is important to us that our House and Gardens can be enjoyed by everyone.

Our Ornamental Gardens have pathways that are suitable for wheelchairs and other walking aides.

The East Entrance provides accessible access to all our buildings including our Chapels, Café, Theatre and Exhibition spaces. 

Accessible parking is available by the East Entrance. Please call at the Visitor Centre car park and our staff will give you access to the route and alert colleagues in the main house to your arrival.

Directions

We hold the Good Journey Mark for welcoming car-free visitors. Travel a greener way and enjoy 25% off day entry. Plan your journey by visiting Good Journey

Leave the A1(M) at junction 63, Chester-Le-Street. Continue south on the A167 until you reach Crossgate Moor on the outskirts of Durham. Turn right at the first set of traffic lights just past the pedestrian footbridge. Ushaw is signposted from here

Leave the A1(M) at junction 59, north of Darlington, and continue north on the A167 (for approximately 14 miles) to the traffic lights at Neville’s Cross on the outskirts of Durham City. Continue to the third set of traffic lights by Sainsbury’s Local and turn left. Ushaw is signposted here, 2 1/2 miles.

Ushaw is 10 minutes by taxi from Durham Rail Station.

From Durham City bus station: 
 
The Gateshead Central Taxis Number 52 takes you direct to Ushaw’s main visitor entrance. It runs a limited timetable every 2.5hrs Monday to Saturday, daytime only with no service from early evening, or on a sunday at anytime.
 
The Arriva Number 48 stops at Bearpark (Aged Miners Homes) it’s then a 15-20 minute walk to Ushaw.
 
From 23 May to 31 August 2026, the Durham Explorer 874 buses will operate on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holiday bus services offer an affordable and convenient way to Ushaw.

Ushaw is a public visitor attraction and smoking isn’t permitted inside our buildings.

You’re welcome to smoke outside in our grounds, please dispose of cigarette butts in bins provided.
