Library Conservation Underway at Ushaw

This year, we were delighted to receive funding from MD North to support vital conservation work in our historic library. With their help, we welcomed conservator Gloria Conti, who has been leading the effort to clean and preserve part of the collection.

Working alongside our dedicated volunteers, Gloria has been using specialist equipment to carefully clean the books, assess them for any needed repairs, and ensure they are stored correctly. Many of these books are several centuries old and require expert handling and extra-special care.

With 30,000 books in the collection, this is a significant undertaking that will take time to complete. The work is ongoing, but every step brings us closer to safeguarding these treasures for future generations.

We invite you to take a behind-the-scenes look at the project in our short video, featuring Gloria and our incredible team of book-cleaning volunteers.

A heartfelt thank you to MD North and Coalfield Studios for their help in making this film.
