Families and fans of classic children’s literature are invited to journey back in time this summer, as The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Book Artists comes to Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens, opening Saturday 28 June.
The project, undertaken by Northern Construction Solutions, includes structural reinforcements to the gallery walls, the installation of new secure doors, and major improvements to security systems. These upgrades will This family-focused exhibition celebrates the iconic art of Ladybird book illustrators from the 1940s to the 1970s, a golden age of children’s publishing that shaped imaginations for generations. Visitors of all ages can explore a beautifully curated display of original artworks, visual storytelling, and the show-stopping Wall of Books, a spectacular centrepiece featuring hundreds of original Ladybird volumes from the era.
Whether you’re introducing the magic of Ladybird to your children or indulging in a heartwarming trip down memory lane, the exhibition is designed to delight both younger visitors and those who grew up with these cherished classics. From nature guides and fairy tales to educational titles that made learning fun, the exhibition is a rich celebration of storytelling, art and nostalgia.

A touring exhibition curated by Helen Day, Ladybird book specialist and enthusiast, The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Book Artists is on display from Saturday 28 June – Sunday 31 August 2025. Entry to the exhibition is included with Ushaw’s Membership or Day Pass.
The Ladybird exhibition also ties in beautifully with Ushaw’s Festival of Books, taking place on Saturday 9 August. This lively literary celebration will feature guest authors, illustrators, storytelling, book-themed activities, and much more.
