Dogs at Ushaw
Starting 1 April 2025, we will be launching a six-month trial allowing well-behaved dogs inside the Main House

To ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all visitors, we ask that guests with dogs follow these guidelinesÂ
- Dogs must remain on a short lead at all times.
- Maximum of two dogs per person at any one time.
- Dogs are permitted in our Main House corridors only (also referred to as Ambulacrum).
- Restricted areas – Dogs are not permitted in our Chapels, exhibition rooms, function rooms, bed & breakfast, tours, ticketed events or classes. Additional restrictions may apply during large events or busy periods.
- Café – once you have been served, dogs and their owners must remain in the dedicated area in the Café corridor (Ambulacrum)
- Supervision – owners must supervise their dogs at all times and may not leave them unattended, or with someone who is unable to supervise them.
- Behaviour – only well-behaved dogs are permitted. Dogs displaying excessive barking, growling, or disruptive behavior may be asked to leave. Please be mindful of other visitors who may not be comfortable around dogs.
- Cleaning up – owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs, any accidents must be reported to a member of staff. Please do not bring wet or muddy dogs into the building.
- Service animals – service animals are always welcome in accordance with ADA guidelines.
Gardens & Grounds
Your dogs are welcomed in our grounds, but please note the following restrictions

- In the Ornamental Gardens all dogs must be on leads.
- Bounds field – dogs may be off the lead if you are in this space alone. If there are any other people and/or dogs in the space, please put your dog on a lead.
- Meadow – your dog may be off the lead in this space.
- Wider estate footpaths – dogs can be off the lead unless there is livestock in which case please keep them on the lead.

Please pick up after your dog and dispose of the bags in a bin or take home with you.
