To Ushaw and Beyond
Astronomy and the Catholic church have a history so interwoven that they cannot be separated.
As long as time immemorial, people have looked up to the heavens and tried to make sense of what they see. For some, it is a display of divine majesty, for others it is a celestial landscape to be mapped, measured, documented and explored. These two approaches do not have to be mutually exclusive, yet they have been divisive.
This exhibition uses artefacts from Ushaw’s collections to look at the study of space throughout history and how it is still relevant to recent scientific research projects at Durham University. It displays first editions of Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei and Tycho Brahe.
To Ushaw and Beyond is on display from Saturday 28 June – Sunday 9 November 2025.
Entry is included with an Ushaw Membership or Day Pass.
