Farm Street Choir Vespers & Concert
The combined choirs of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street, and the Grosvenor Chapel, London, come together under the direction of Richard Hobson and Duncan Aspden for an evening that melds the Catholic and Anglican choral traditions into one programme of radiant English sacred music.
Spanning four centuries from the golden age of Weelkes and Gibbons to the luminous modern voice of Cecilia McDowall, the concert brings together two great liturgical strands: the ceremonial richness of the Catholic rite and the heritage of Anglican cathedral music, sung side by side by two professional choirs steeped in each.
At its heart lies S.S. Wesley’s monumental The Wilderness, a cantata alternating drama with tender lyricism, presented in the 150th year of Wesley’s death. The programme also marks fifty years since the death of Benjamin Britten, with his exuberant Te Deum in C, alongside Charles Wood’s glowing Hail, gladdening light, offered in his centenary year.
Prior to the concert, from 6pm to 6:40pm, the choirs will sing Vespers in St. Cuthbert’s Chapel, offering an opportunity to pray together through the Evening Prayer of the Church.
