We are delighted to share a new film celebrating Big Library, made possible thanks to generous funding from MD North.
For many visitors, Big Library is one of the most fascinating spaces on site. Filled with historic collections, architectural detail and centuries of stories, it represents the heart of our heritage. However, we recognise that mobility barriers mean not everyone has been able to experience the space in person.
Bringing Big Library to Everyone
Thanks to support from MD North, we have created a fully guided video tour of Big Library, allowing visitors to explore the space remotely and enjoy its remarkable history wherever they are.
The film includes:
- A complete walk-through of Big Library, offering views normally experienced during an in-person visit
- Insights from our Visitor Programmes Manager, who shares the history and significance of the library
- Behind-the-scenes commentary from our Collections Care Assistant, introducing some of the historic collections cared for within the space
The result is an immersive experience designed to make Big Library accessible to all, particularly those who may find physical access challenging.
Accessibility Through Digital Access
Improving accessibility is a key priority for us. While historic buildings present unique challenges, projects like this allow us to remove barriers and ensure more people can engage with our collections, stories and spaces.
Whether you are planning a future visit, revisiting a favourite place, or exploring from home, we hope this film provides a meaningful connection to Big Library.
We invite you to watch the film below and step inside Big Library.

We are incredibly grateful to MD North for supporting this project and helping us open Big Library to a wider audience. Their funding has enabled us to share our heritage in new ways and ensure that access to culture and history is not limited by mobility.
