Far and Near – Linda Birch

Linda Birch, a painter trained in Fine Art and Illustration, is a Member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers. She has exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society and has held numerous solo shows in England and Scotland.

Her work is in many public and university collections. Linda is also the author of several books on painting and writes and reviews regularly for an international painting
magazine. For a large part of her career, Linda also worked as a successful illustrator on over 200 books and also for BBC TV series, Bagpuss, The Clangers and Jackanory.

A tutor, Linda teaches residential courses in the Lake District, runs a Summer School and teaches a regular art class in Hamsterley, County Durham. She has also taught numerous day courses at The Bowes Museum on art history – teaching it with a paintbrush. This stems from a passion for art history, artists and the skills, techniques and styles of the past, and what they have to teach today’s painters. The courses are designed to complement current exhibitions at The Bowes, and have ranged from Turner, Atkinson Grimshaw, El Greco and Impressionist painting to Julian Opie.
