Derek Slater – Time Changes Nothing
Derek Slater is a North East artist who lives in Ferryhill. He started painting over 50 years ago after a hand injury prevented him from boxing competitively.
He was employed by British Coal as a fitter at Tursdale Workshop for 26 years. He had started work as a miner at Mainsforth Colliery. After being made redundant by British Coal he completed a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree course at the University of Sunderland. When he completed his degree he taught art part-time at Stockton College, Billingham Community
Centre and the Education Department at Holme House Prison.
He also continued painting, his subjects were mainly coal mining scenes; he has a book relating to these paintings called The Coal Mine.
In the works shown here, Slater has attempted to address the problems that man often repeats with ominous and catastrophic consequences. The exhibition deals with the outcomes of war, the effects of climate change, pollution, racism, over population, animal cruelty, violence, homelessness and unemployment.
Time Changes Nothing explores the problems man has incurred in the past, which are still happening and the ways in which they impact the planet and its inhabitants.
