After planting an incredible 20,000+ trees last year, Ushaw invited the public to help shape its legacy by suggesting a name for the woodland via social media. The competition saw fantastic engagement, but one name stood out among the rest: Avery Wood, submitted by Maria Wheeler.
Maria’s suggestion was inspired by a deep family connection to Ushaw. Her grandfather, Vivian Avery, worked as a painter and decorator at Ushaw, lending his skill to the stunning gold leaf and stencilling that still graces Ushaw’s interiors today.

Explaining her winning choice, Maria shared: “Naming the wood in memory of my grandfather Vivian Avery and his parents who also worked at Ushaw is a tremendous honour. It is a reminder of our family connections and many happy memories of Ushaw. To us, establishing the wood also recognises the vast team of unsung workers that kept, and continue to keep, Ushaw alive and running throughout the years. The thought and care for the land that has gone into the creation of the wood is wonderful and leaves a sustainable legacy for the flora, fauna and wildlife of the future. We are so happy that many generations will be able to enjoy the woodland in the years to come.”
Ady Davis, Ushaw’s Head Gardener, expressed his delight at the new name: “It’s been fantastic to see so many people engage with this project and suggest names that reflect the history, landscape, and spirit of Ushaw. Avery Wood feels like the perfect fit – it ties our rich heritage to our future, celebrating both nature and the people who have helped shape Ushaw over generations.”
Avery Wood will be an important part of Ushaw’s commitment to nature and sustainability. Over the coming years, the trees will grow into a thriving woodland, providing a peaceful space for visitors to enjoy.
The project wouldn’t have been possible without the help of volunteers who helped to plant the trees last year and grants received from North East Community Forest.
Ushaw extends a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the competition, and of course, congratulations to Maria for her winning entry.
